Air Quality API now available

Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10), Saharan dust, atmospheric gases, UV-index and pollen forecasts are now available with the Air Quality API.

Data are based on Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and offer 7 days forecast at hourly values. The global domain with 40 kilometres resolution is scaled down to 11 kilometres for Europe.

CAMS is using satellite data as initial conditions to capture pollutants on a global level. Below is a map of nitrogen dioxide. Even at 40 kilometres resolution it captures trade routes very well.

With initial satellite observations, numerical models forecast how wind is moving pollutants or how clouds and particles in the air affect UV radiation. Models start every 12 hours with the lastest observations, wind and cloud forecasts.

The European domain includes pollen forecasts as well. Depending on the flowering season, up to 6 different pollens are forecast. Unfortunately they are not available on a global level, but only Europe.

CAMS is not the only agency to offer air pollution forecasts. In the upcoming months, more open-data models will be integrated into Open-Meteo!
